Eastern Railway launched a major anti-encroachment operation at Belur station last night, demolishing nearly 70 illegal shops constructed on railway premises. The action was taken after repeated notices to vacate the area were ignored by the encroachers.
The drive continued till late night, with railway officials and security personnel clearing the station’s platforms and adjoining areas of unauthorized structures. Local shopkeepers were taken by surprise, but officials said the operation had been planned well in advance.
Railway authorities stated that the move was essential to improve passenger facilities and ensure safety on the busy station premises. “Despite prior notices, the encroachments were not removed. The operation was necessary to maintain order and provide a safe environment for commuters,” said an Eastern Railway spokesperson.
The cleared area is now being assessed for further development, including expanded passenger waiting zones and better circulation space.
